Mission Trip: Eating
In Costa Rica, they eat a lot of rice, beans, and fruit. When I say a lot, it’s every meal; breakfast (desayuno), lunch (almuerzo), and dinner (cene). Now I am diabetic and after a day and a half, I needed more protein than beans. However, I didn’t want to offend the cooks and Pastora. When I went to the corner market, Ishi (one of the translators) told me to get what I needed. Then she told the Pastor’s wife my situation. Pastora told me this was my home for the rest of my stay and I could use the kitchen whenever I needed. Yeh! Eggs and meat for breakfast. I did have a little difficulty with the electric fryer. Ok, I burned it a little. So they gave me my own fry pan. I got to eat with the cooks, the pastor, and his wife. I really enjoyed sitting in that kitchen while eating and trying to translate some of the conversations. It felt like home.
There were a few other foods I enjoyed while in Costa Rica. I am glad I did a lot of walking and climbing stairs. Or my doctor’s would not be happy with me. I also wish we had this chicken place in this country. It was great protein. That’s my excuse, and I am sticking to it.

Note: The Pastor’s wife is called Pastora out of respect.
