The Catacombs
Day 98 Stop and Look 365
The last best kept secret at the Franciscan Monastery is the catacombs. These catacombs also have 1,000 year old relics that are not replicas but the real thing. One is of a 7 year old martyr St. Innocent. The second is of St. Benignus who is encased in wax. He was a Roman soldier who was decapitated because of his faith. The crypt holds his body but his head is at a church in Italy. There are also other crypts, tombs and a vivid painting on which the artist envisioned what purgatory would look like on the altar in the Purgatory Chapel. I hope you have enjoyed your journey through the Monasteries replicas of the Holy Land in America. It is truly worth seeing up close. So, go take a “Look.”
