The manor was owned by Dr. Richard Epps.  General Grant and his men built a number of cabins to accommodate them.  This was not only a base of operations for Civil War efforts and the Siege of Petersburg and Richmond. It should be noted that not too far from here the African American regiments of the Union Army fought a battle at Bayor’s Farm which made an impact on the war efforts in this region. The actual battle area is located inside the base at Fort Lee.

The manor was also a place where Grant entertained people like; President Lincoln, Vice President Andrew Johnson and Secretary of State William Seward. The property provides views of the James and Appomattox Rivers.
